Tim's work history

Tim is a design professional with extensive experience designing and delivering software/business application UX/UI, web design and content, print media, marketing materials and product packaging. I am a strong end user advocate who designs with customer workflows as a first consideration.

I started at Penguin Books as a new book and media designer more than twenty years ago and never looked back. Over the years this industry and technology have evolved. I have evolved along with it, adding expertise in web/online, software interface and user experience, etc. In addition to being completely current with the needs of today’s marketplace and technologies, I have tremendous breadth and depth of experience across many aspects of professional design.

Softpress Systems - Oxford, UK
Creative Director
9/2009 - 6/2012

As the Creative Director of this small software company it was my task to set the design focus in everything the company did from their web site through to press ads, banner advertising, and sales and marketing materials.

Being at the heart of a small company like Softpress has allowed me to roll up my sleves and get to grips with many aspects of the running of the company outside of my tradional design roots.

Microsoft Expression Media - Redmond, WA
User Experience Engineer
4/2007 - 4/2009

I was the UX designer for Expression Media and have been even prior to its acquisition from iView in London in the spring of 2007. In this role I did all UX and UI design work for three full versions of the product. This included both new feature work and reworks of existing workflows to improve the overall user experience. In this capacity I collaborated closely with program management, product planning and our customers for design and continued with dev and test through implementation and the rest of the product cycle. As this was a fairly small team I typically also performed project management duties especially related to spec writing.

iView Multimedia Limited,

In this role I designed and created the product packaging, e-commerce web site, intranet site, sales and marketing materials, exhibition stand as well as working on the product in terms of iconography, splash screens and other user interface elements. Work on the application also included creating and testing automation scripts and creating a number of web export templates. This was a highly collaborative role where I worked extensively with the sales, marketing and engineering teams.

Smee’s Advertising Limited - London, UK
Head of Interactive
6/2000 - 2/2004

In this role I managed a five person media division for a well established advertising agency. It was my job to manage the day-to-day running of the department, including everything from client liaison, project scoping and design proposals, to quoting, project construction and testing. My team provided comprehensive design solutions incorporating websites, CD-ROMs, and touch screen kiosks. Our diverse clientele included major pharmaceutical companies, national property agents and children’s toy manufacturers.

ButtonIT Limited - London, UK

In this role I was a rich interactive designer producing interactive training materials, websites, etc. My responsibilities included design and production of all of the materials required, be it graphic, video or sound content. Client liaison, project scoping and conceptualization through to project creation and delivery were also areas I covered.

Dorling Kindersley Multimedia - London, UK
Interactive Designer & Team Lead
4/1994 - 1/1998

Working in a number of different project teams both in a design and leadership role the three years at DKMM gave me a great understanding of both the CD-ROM and web areas of traditional children's non-fiction publishing. Tasks ranged from product conceptualization, interface and content creation and testing to packaging design and artwork.

Penguin Books Limited - London, UK
Book and New Media Designer
10/1988 - 4/1994

Initially working on both children's and adult fiction and non-fiction titles my duties included designing, commissioning photography, illustrations, and design for both the text and covers of the titles. Later, as Penguin moved into the new media markets I became their only new media designer. Projects included moving existing children's titles over to a CD-ROM format with user interfaces to suit both the series and age group.

I am passionate about, and a keen advocate of online digital technologies. As such I follow the industry closely and take an active role in promoting those sectors, mainly by way of tutorials, articles, and software development. I enjoy empowering others with custom tools, scripts and applications that aim to streamline their working procedures and unify disparate practices. I also enjoy a wide range of popular (and some not so popular) music and attend live performances whenever I can. Whenever the weather and time allows I also like to get out in the fresh air with my wife and young children.
